In this activity-laden 2-day course, first-time managers and supervisors will be coached to make the shift that enhances their capacity to deliver business results through others.
First-time managers and supervisors are more effective when they can transition effectively to managing the priorities of the new role. This is the aim of this course. Participants will learn how to recognize hidden transition traps and how to avoid them, and to quickly establish credibility. They will practice proven steps for goal alignment and task delegation, so they can focus on the job of supervision. They will learn how to build and leverage their influencing capital where formal authority is impossible. Foundational leadership skills like listening, feedback, and self-awareness will be covered to provide personal enablers for success as first-time managers and supervisors. They will also benefit from customizable job aids for immediate use on return to work.

High-performing individual contributors who are being prepared for supervisory roles will have a needed head start preparation. Participants in groups of three or more from the same organization are likely to benefit most from the activities and exercises.
MODULE 1: TRANSITION TO SUPERVISOR OR MANAGER EFFECTIVELY
After years of being accountable to self, a newly appointed supervisor or manager enters new waters where it is important to quickly recognize what is different now, and what is required now, to effectively make the shift. In this introductory module, participants are guided to reflect on their experiences as individual contributors compared to what is different now as supervisors. Based on this reflection, they will be coached to be better positioned for the requirements of the new role. Specific areas include:
1. Recognising what is different now and self-assessing one’s readiness
2. Identifying potential transition traps and how to avoid them
3. Establishing early credibility to gain team members’ trust
MODULE 2: PROMOTE OWNERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO BUSINESS GOALS
When employees appreciate the rationale for their specific task assignments, they are likely to be more motivated to engage in it. The supervisor’s job is to learn how to apply this understanding to raise ownership and commitment in the team, which is the focus of this module:
1. Set clear and measurable goals through line-of-sight alignment
2. Apply effective communication practices across all levels
3.Identify individual readiness levels and structure delegation efforts accordingly
MODULE 3: ASSESS TEAM STRENGTH AND DEVELOP INDIVIDUALS
By dimensioning team strength into technical, functional, and relational skills, the supervisor can make accurate assessments of individual development needs and delegation readiness. This module takes a very practical approach to helping participants achieve this objective.
They will learn how to:
1. Determine team development needs
2. Assess the delegation readiness of each member based on the evaluation
3. Provide effective result-oriented delegation, feedback, and coaching
MODULE 4: PERSONAL INFLUENCING AND COLLABORATIVE SKILLS
