About the Course

For the better part of every day, at work, at home, or on the road, we are communicating with and with others. Whether it's the speech you deliver in the boardroom, the level of attention you give your colleagues when they are talking to you, or a cursory glance, it all means something. When done right, assertiveness skills help you to express yourself clearly and to the point, while sustaining the business interest. However, balancing purpose and relationship, especially when personalities are involved, is no mean job.
This is because communication is an interpersonal process, and self-confidence and assertiveness are crucial skills for a successful engagement.

In this workshop participants will be exposed to the various shades of the Assertiveness Continuum, and practice has proven skills for holding conversations that deliver the appropriate business and personal impacts.

At the end of the course, the following learning outcomes will be realized.

  • Recognize why assertiveness is your basic right
  • Identify assertive and non-assertive behaviors – yours and others
  • Understand how to adapt your communication in different work situations
  • Handle aggressive behaviors with greater confidence
  • Develop cultural awareness and promote inclusiveness

  • Learn the fundamental principles of communication
  • Practice self-awareness and self-regulation for effective communication.

  • Recognize your assertiveness level and how to improve it
  • Practice strategies for gaining positive outcomes in difficult interpersonal situations: Aggressive, passive, or assertive

Course Content

Day 1: Understanding Assertiveness and Communication Fundamentals

Module 1: Introduction to Assertive Communication

  • Definition and importance of assertiveness at work.
  • The Assertiveness Continuum: Understanding different communication styles.

Module 2: Self-Assessment and Awareness

  • Identifying personal communication styles: Assertive, passive, and aggressive behaviors.
  • Exercises for self-awareness and recognizing triggers in communication.

Module 3: Principles of Effective Communication

  • Fundamental principles that govern assertive communication.
  • Role-playing scenarios to practice basic communication principles.

Module 4: Active Listening and Questioning Techniques

  • Developing active listening skills to enhance understanding.
  • Different questioning styles to clarify and deepen communication.

Module 5: Handling Aggression and Developing Confidence

  • Strategies to handle aggressive behaviors in others.
  • Building confidence in expressing oneself assertively.

Day 2: Advanced Assertiveness Skills and Practical Applications

Module 6: Cultural Awareness and Inclusivity

  • Understanding cultural differences in communication styles.
  • Promoting inclusiveness through assertive communication techniques.

Module 7: Influencing Without Authority

  • Techniques for influencing and collaborating without formal power.
  • Case studies on effective influence in the workplace.

Module 8: Adapting Communication in Diverse Situations

  • Adapting assertiveness based on the context and relationship dynamics.
  • Group exercises to practice situational communication adaptations.

Module 9: Self-Regulation and Emotional Control

  • Techniques for self-regulation and maintaining composure under stress.
  • Practical exercises for applying self-regulation in workplace scenarios.

Module 10: Strategy Development for Interpersonal Challenges

  • Recognizing the spectrum of assertiveness in difficult situations.
  • Strategies and tools for achieving desired outcomes in challenging interpersonal interactions.

Module 11: Action Planning and Commitment

  • Developing personal action plans to improve assertiveness.
  • Commitment to applying learned skills in real-world situations.
